Washington may well come to regret the sleazy and unconstitutional deal it is promoting between Pakistan’s military ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf and exiled former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.Mind you, the Pakistani constitution is written on rubber and has frequently been stretched this way and that to accommodate the political ambitions of the moment.But if Washington’s motives are as they seem — to create a stable and reasonably democratic administration that will be an effective ally against the Taliban and al-Qaida in neighbouring Afghanistan — there’s little reason for confidence in a Musharraf-Bhutto alliance.
