Being Flashy with no Substance

July 31, 2007

I want to share with you today an old story of a man named Yang Chufu. He was a very important diplomat in the Jin dynasty.

During his time he was sent to the county of Wei on an important diplomatic mission. When he arrived back, he passed through Ningyi County and spent the night in a hotel there. The owner of the hotel, Mr. Ying, took note of how good the diplomat’s appearance was. He commented to his wife, “I wanted to follow and excellent person years ago, but so many years passed an I never found one. Now, I think your husband is such a person. So, I want to go with him wherever he goes.”

With the permission of his wife he went with Yang Chufu. On the way, they randomly discussed political theory, religion and philosophy. But before long Mr. Ying returned home.

Suddenly finding her husband had come back, his wife asked why he had returned so soon.. He said, “I appreciate that he had a good appearance, but his talking is frivolous. If I follow him I will learn nothing other than how to look good. Since the world is not governed by looks, I have come back.

See where you can apply this lesson in your own life and how you can learn be aware of this potential pitfall.

Letting go of Form

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

At first, form is needed.
Then doubt and inhibition must be dispelled.
Eventually form is celebrated with joy,
And expression becomes formless.

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

In all fields of endeavor,
one must start out with
certain structures, procedures
and forms. Even though one
admires the seemingly effortless
virtuosity of the masters, it will
take time before one can reach that level.

Take dance for example. The novice
must drill constantly on the basics,
isolating each step and movement
with meticulous attention.

Although the emphasis is on structure
may add to the beginner’s inhibition,
it must be done.

Eventually, the student will learn to
let go. The steps will have become part
of their natural movements. Then dancing
can be celebrated joyously.

Our now mature dancer may even dance in
a way that seems so spontaneous, so magical,
that it will even seem formless–or more
correctly the form will emerge with
fluidity, beauty, originality, balance and grace.

The same is true for any endeavor.

A first the practice and restrictions
seem quite constricting. Eventually
you reach a stage where learning and
understanding simply flow spontaneously.
Each and every day is new and fresh
and full of insight.

The beauty of the world then shows
itself as it is. Doubts begin to fade
away and the banality of ordinary life
is replaced by the awe and grandeur
of your own life.

This is what it is to be formless.

Lead the way–

Today Walter Block adds more to his critique of the Pro-War Libertarian approach to foreign policy of Randy Barnett, et. al.

Over the weekend, John V. Denson — author of A Century of War, The Costs of War and Reassessing the Presidency — wrote a very good review of The Pearl Harbor Myth: Rethinnking the Unthinkalbe by George Victor. In his piece untitled, FDR, Pearl Harbor and the U.N. Mr. Denson agrees with some points Mr. Victor makes but states that,
“I strongly disagree with his conclusion that the American people have knowingly condoned the deceitful activity of the presidents Victor mentions because our history books do not contain this information, it is not taught in the schools and universities and it is not recited by the news media. You have to have independent researchers like Victor to find and disclose most of this information.”

Also over the weekend, Lew Rockwell wrote an article citing The Federal Governments intervention into the economy is making our present stae like, “It’s the 1930s All Over Again.”

Lew asks, “What would happen should the bottom fall out? Scary thought. We need ever more public spokesmen for our cause. In many ways, the Mises Institute bears a heavy burden as the world’s leading institutional voice for peace and economic liberty. So does LewRockwell.com. And we are working in every way possible to make sure that the flame of freedom is not extinguished, even in the face of legions of charlatans and power-mongers. Even though the politics of our times is as dark as ever, there are bright lights on the horizon.”

I DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR (OR AFFIRM) THAT I WILL SUPPORT AND DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AGAINST ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC; THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE FAITH AND ALLEGIANCE TO THE SAME; AND THAT I WILL OBEY THE ORDERS OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE ORDERS OF THE OFFICERS APPOINTED OVER ME, ACCORDING TO REGULATIONS AND THE UNIFORM CODE OF MILITARY JUSTICE.
